Almost all attorneys use online and offline directories such as the Yellow Pages, to get their name in front of potential clients. In fact, attorneys as a professional group are some of the biggest spenders on such directories. Lately, the number of online directories listing professional services has grown significantly. In recent years, the online directory concept has developed to include user commentary and ratings as well as further fragmentation in verticals and location based services, many of which now include social media and community components. In addition to Avvo.com, which is probably one of the most prominent examples out there, there is a growing range of other online directories offering the same or similar services to consumers and lawyers, including Nolo.com or LawInfo.com.
To make the most of this new trend in online directories, we recommend this three step process:
- Identify: Research and identify several lawyer directories offering attorneys to participate in content generation and user-interaction for free.
- Engage: Become a member of the attorney community, submit a few articles, answer or contribute to forum/community questions.
- Manage: Check back in periodic intervals and see if you can contribute more to the community or if your profile needs to be updated. When managing your profiles in various forums, try to spend your time where it pays off the most.
